Smart Packing Tips
Adopt a Minimalist Mindset
- Less is More: The less you carry, the more freedom you’ll have.
- Two Bags Max: Stick to a checked bag/carry-on bag and a daypack.
- Less is More: Bring half the clothes you think you need. A lighter load makes for a more pleasant journey.
- Give Your Clothes a Test Run: If you aren’t comfortable in your clothes/shoes at home or running errands, don’t pack them for the trip.
Plan for Versatility
- Pick a Color Palette: Choose neutral or twin-color schemes (e.g., black/white/grey or brown/green/white) to maximize mix-and-match options.
- Pack Layers: Include wrinkle-free, tech fabrics that are lightweight and easy to layer for varying weather conditions.
- Choose Multipurpose Items: Opt for clothes with pockets or zippers for added security and function.
Pack Smarter
- Use Packing Aids: Packing cubes or large Ziploc bags help organize and save space.
- Shoes Are Heavy: Limit to 1-2 pairs—one comfortable walking shoe and one sandal or casual option. Avoid heavy hiking boots unless absolutely necessary. If you purchase new shoes, make sure to break them in before you go.
- Quick-Drying Essentials: Opt for quick-drying, moisture-wicking options that are easy to wash and reuse during your trip. These save space and reduce the need for packing large quantities. Look for travel-friendly brands designed for comfort and durability. Men Underwear | Woman Underwear
Avoid Overpacking
- No "Just in Case" Items: Assume you can purchase what you need along the way.
- Don’t Bring Valuables: Avoid packing anything expensive, irreplaceable, or sentimental.
Hygiene and Comfort
- Share Toiletries: Coordinate with your travel companion to avoid duplicates.
- Dryer Sheets: Place a sheet in your luggage to keep it smelling fresh.
Money and Security
- Carry Some Cash: Split cash between suitcases and hide it in secure spots (e.g., hollowed-out chapstick or electrolyte tubes).
- Small Bills: Crisp bills for tipping or small purchases.
- Travel Wallets: Use RFID-blocking wallets or money belts for added safety.
Pre-Departure Checklist
- Valid Passport: Double-check your passport and make sure it is still valid for at least six months with five empty pages.
- Copies of Important Documents: Take a photo of your passport, photos of prescriptions, and make a list of your prescriptions and credit cards, then save them to Apple Notes, Google Drive, or email them to yourself. This will facilitate quick replacement if they are lost or stolen.
- Consider Getting Some Currency: Some travelers get a small amount of foreign currency before leaving for peace of mind, though ATMs are widely available. I usually withdraw local currency at an ATM upon arrival. Inform your bank about travel plans, and ensure teammates have access to different banks' ATMs for security.
- Emergency Contacts: Ensure all emergency contacts are updated and easily accessible.
- Medications: Pack enough in pill containers to last the entire trip with valid prescriptions.
- Financial Prep: Inform your banks about your travel itinerary.
- Health Precautions: Make sure you are up-to-date on immunizations and your necessary prescriptions.
- "Out Of Office" email notifications: While you might occasionally check in, you may prefer to rest during your downtime.
Packing List Essentials
Luggage / Travel Gear
Main Luggage
- Roller Bag (Checked Luggage): Ensure the weight does not exceed 50 lbs. Since all luggage will be checked and handled together, there’s no incentive to carry on unless you prefer it. Keep in mind that less is more, don’t pack all 50lbs. Keep in mind you should be able to lift and carry your own suitcase. Level8 Grace Carry On (20 Inch)
Carry-On Bags/Day Packs
- Backpack/Carry-On: Structured backpacks like Ospreys are a great choice for comfort and organization. Look for one with padded straps and compartments for tech or essentials.
- Daybag: A collapsible daypack is lightweight and easy to store to use while scavenging. Osprey makes an excellent option, but note that it lacks structure, causing items to settle at the bottom. Ensure your daybag is comfortable, as it will be used daily. Osprey Ultralight Collapsible Stuff Pack
- Sling Bag or Fanny Pack: Perfect for keeping essentials like passports, cash, and snacks within easy reach. The Lululemon belt bag is highly recommended for its style and functionality. Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag | Osprey Daylite Shoulder Sling
Optional Extras
- Collapsible Duffel: Great for souvenirs or dirty clothes. Pack it in your checked bag and use it as your luggage fills up. Affordable and compact options are widely available. Collapsible Duffle Bag
- Packing Cubes: Compression or standard cubes are highly recommended for organizing clothing, maximizing space, and easy packing/unpacking at each destination. Compression Packing Cubes
- Money Belt: Optional but useful for safely carrying cash, cards, and important documents. Look for an RFID-blocking option for added security. Money Belt
- Luggage Tracking: Ensure peace of mind by tracking your luggage with a device like a Tile Tracker or Apple AirTag. These compact devices allow you to monitor your bag's location in real time via your smartphone, making it easy to locate in case of delays or mishandling.
